Today marks the beginning of African Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich and diverse history of the Black community. We honour the achievements of Black individuals, recognizing the importance of unity and understanding in building a stronger, more inclusive community.

🌊 🐠 Recently, the youth staying at Eva's took a trip to Ripley's Aquarium, which was an educational and exciting journey filled with insightful conversations about marine life. Thank you to Ripley's Aquarium of Canada for providing a discounted group rate for this outing.

Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine is a Grenadian Canadian educator, advocate, and politician. She was the first Black Canadian woman elected to the House of Commons. Along with Eva Smith and other advocates, Dr. Augustine has spent her career working to make change.

Today, we extend our gratitude to Ed Smith for his service to the Board. As we bid farewell to Ed, we also welcome Marcus Smith, Ed's grandson, as our newest honourary board member representing the Smith Family. Join us in expressing our gratitude to Ed and welcoming Marcus!

As a school outreach worker, Eva Smith noticed that the school system and curriculum failed to reflect and engage Black students. In order to address the inequities, Eva offered classes on Saturdays to give Black students an opportunity to learn about their history and culture.

In November 2023, we conducted our second annual youth survey to deepen our understanding of the demographics of those we support, ensuring our services align with their evolving needs. Read the full survey results here: evas.ca/who-we-serve

This past weekend at Eva's, the staff and youth at Phoenix came together to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a delicious cooking session! They rolled up their sleeves and whipped up some mouthwatering egg rolls, savoury lo mein noodles, and refreshing cabbage salad.

Last week, youth at Eva's Phoenix celebrated Black History Month by watching the thought-provoking "Patty Wars" documentary, diving deep into the local history of the Jamaican patty. After the film, the youth learned how to make Jamaican Patties from scratch. 🥟🥟

Today on Pink Shirt Day, we proudly join the movement to spread kindness and say NO to bullying. At Eva's, we believe in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all youth. Together, let's stand up, speak out, and spread love and acceptance. 👚

This past weekend, in celebration of Black History Month, The Trending Table kicked off their very first market of 2024 at stackt, where there was a donation drive for Eva's. We are so grateful to all those who donated items. We can't wait for the next one!

As we celebrate International Women's Day today, we're also mindful of Black Mental Health Week. Black women face disproportionate barriers to accessing mental health support. Together, let's work towards a future where all Black women can thrive and access the care they deserve.
