Catching up on D-Day The Unheard Tapes, and given the date, it seems appropriate to repost this… (see next tweet).

1) 1985: near the end of a road trip around France, my girlfriend and I started our tour of Normandy at Pegasus Bridge. The road to the bridge was named Boulevard Major John Howard. Three neatly mown circles on the canal bank to our left marked where the gliders landed...

2) The red, GB plated Audi parked nearby drew little interest until my girlfriend read the name on the disabled badge inside the windscreen. Major John Howard. On the opposite canal bank about 30 people were listening to a distinguished man sitting on a shooting stick.

3) We quietly joined the edge of the group and listened, awe struck, for 90 minutes while Major John Howard told his story. We were so privileged to hear it first hand.
