Happy new year to all PhD students and supervisors! Do you have any resolutions for this year? Mine: 1. More time for writing myself 2. Being the best supervisor I can be 3. Accept that I can’t prevent nor solve all PhD struggles 4. Weekly tweets #AcademicTwitter #PhdLife

Yay! Our Dutch & English clips on asking feedback are now available on YouTube: youtu.be/25BIaT0_ewg?si… Even though its always awkward to see videos of yourself, I’m happy that they can now be used in our programmes for students and teachers. #feedbackliteracy #academictwitter

"Your manucript is ready for revision". Zo blij met dit bericht van de editor voor onze externe promovenda die ondanks tegenslagen zo volhardend blijft. Enorm trots op haar 💪 #phdlife Happy PhD Supervisor

I want to just remind all grad students that lots of paper comments/edits from mentors/advisors are an act of love and an expression confidence in your work and ideas. It's hard to open a document & see all that - but that's a sure sign that we think the work is worth it.

In the Netherlands a PhD defense is 45 minutes of discussion with at least 5 full professors, in the Academy building, joined by colleagues, family & friends. As supervising team we don’t ask nor answer questions. And after the defense? We party 🥳. How will you defend? #PhDChat

Happy PhD Supervisor Definitely ask the student. I was fine having weekly meetings but when I got overwhelmed the supervisors (mostly main one) gave me a pep talk that helped. Not every week needs to feel "productive". They need to know you're supportive even when there are no results

If you have constructive feedback, it’s not rude to speak up. It's unkind to stay silent. Honesty is the highest form of flattery. It signals that you respect their ability to handle the truth. Don't deprive people of the opportunity to learn. Offering ideas is an act of care.

What an honor to be invited to share these tips for the junior researchers of EARLI SIG 1. And special thanks to my costar, Happy PhD Student Claudia Tielemans, and @Niels6434847779 for opening up about their highs and lows of doing a PhD. #sig1conference #PhdLife #PhdChat

Advice for PhD Candidates: 1. Choose a supportive advisor. 2. Seek sincere connections, not just "networking." 3. Papers open doors; ethics and meaningful connections open the right ones. 4. Stay connected to your initial motivation. 5. Your actions define you, not your title.
