15 August Victory over Japan Day (also known as V-J Day, Victory in the Pacific Day, or V-P Day) is the day on which Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced to his people, via a pre-recorded radio broadcast, Imperial Japan has surrendered and the celebrations began!

Following Japan's acceptance of Allied terms, the first overseas Japanese post to surrender was that at Mili Atoll, in the southeastern Marshall Islands. Its surrender took place on 22 August on board the escort ship USS Levy (DE-162)

29 August 1944 – Pennsylvania’s 28th Infantry Division leads the American contingent in the “Liberation Day” parade down the Champs Elysees as Paris explodes with joy after the Germans withdraw from Paris. They marched through Paris without stopping, and in combat the next day.

1 September 1939 – At 0445 hours German forces invade Poland without a declaration of war. The operation is code named Fall Weiss (Plan White). The Germans allot 52 divisions for the invasion (some 1.5 million men), including the 6 armored divisions and all their motorized units.

3 September 1777 – The American flag is flown in battle for the first time, during a Revolutionary War skirmish at Cooch’s Bridge, DE. Patriot Gen Maxwell ordered the stars and strips banner raised as a detachment of his infantry and cavalry met an advance guard of British troops

6 September 1976– A Soviet Air Force pilot, Viktor Belenko, defects and lands his MIG 25 "Foxbat" fighter jet in Japan and asks for asylum in the United States. The incident was a serious embarrassment for the Soviets, and also provided a treasure trove of intel for US officials.

Patriot Day on September 11th honors the memory of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Each year in the US, the day is dedicated to remembering those who died as well as those who risked their own lives to save others. NEVER FORGET!
