Did you crawl as a child? I didn’t. I used to shuffle sideways. Not crawling may be a sign of hypermobility /EDS & a reluctance to load the upper body. Other signs could be hip dysplasia, motor delays in walking, so called clumsy or fidgety & poor coord skills like ball catch

Stability time. This week we’re looking at global stability using a yoga block. This series also has stability classes with a tennis ball, ball and band. Hope it’s helpful. youtu.be/Qkz7Fs2EzHk?si…

Posture is not just about the muscular system. It’s impacted by so many things. It’s not ‘fixed’ by stacking our bones. It’s an important expression of who we are, how we are feeling, our emotions, our pain, our state. Telling someone they have ‘bad’ posture is not helpful.

Global stability needed I still see a lot of talk about joint stabilisation but in isolation of one joint. It’s a complaint we often have that physio / PT treat our issues as individual joint problems. But we have many issues that are all happening at once. All are connected.

EDS / HSD are complex conditions. Multi-systemic. Different presentations & pathways. No one has all the answers - we are still learning so much as research has been lacking. Please be open minded, not closed when working with this patient group. You can’t fit us in a box.

Telling people they have bad posture is one of the things that drive me crazy. There are more like core stability and bracing muscles. But your body is amazing, it’s doing what it can with the info it has right now.

I don’t believe strengthwork is the answer for hypermobility. I mean - not the 1st step. If only it were so easy right. Do a few weights or band work & all will be fixed. With our complexity, we need to do some other things before we get to strength. One size does not fit all

Not all EDS / HSD patients are the same. If you’ve worked with one patient, that’s great. But we can’t use that 1 ref point to assume the same would work for the next patient. We can’t assume “we know all about” EDS. I’m still learning every day after 1000s of ref points.

I am too. Some of my least favorite words …. “Always” “Never” and “We”. EDS and HSD are very heterogeneous so generalizations can be dangerous! “If you’ve seen one EDS patient, you’ve seen ONE EDS patient.” #hEDS #HSD #POTS #MCAS

Injuries & strains can sadly happen if we are pushed into a range of movement that we cannot control. Or we may go into an uncontrolled range ourselves as we lack the proprioceptive awareness, stability and strength to manage the range. The good news is that we can train this.

How did it come to this? People commenting that preparing for medical appointments feels like preparing for a trial. Preparing evidence, hoping to convince the jury! People even stop going to appts because it’s just too stressful.

Sometimes I spend hours (or even days) emotionally 'psyching' myself up for medical appointments, summarising past clinic letters, prioritising symptoms/concerns to discuss.... It's a full-time job managing your health & admin associated with hospital appointments

The trick for people with EDS / HSD is finding movement solutions that don’t activate the danger alarms. Creating a sense of safety in what we do is key. Sometimes we need to address the nervous system instead of initially or alongside the MSK system.
