The Phoenix 11 on Meta's response to their question submitted by Sen Lindsey Graham at January's Big Tech hearing: "We cannot emphasize enough how insufficient & irrelevant this response is to the ongoing threats & revictimization we continue to suffer." thephoenix11.com/statements/met…

New study from Childlight - Global Child Safety Institute shows 300 MILLION children globally have experienced online child sexual abuse IN THE LAST YEAR. The data is clear - this is a public safety emergency. THIS is why social media platforms must be regulated to protect children. theguardian.com/society/articl…

We have to reject the self-mythologising of the technology sector. "AI" is not sentient machines. The "dark web" is not an secret parallel internet. These are all mundane technologies developed by people and legal entities who can and should be held to account.

Important piece from the Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General today. "These harms (from social media) are not a failure of willpower and parenting; they are the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability." nytimes.com/2024/06/17/opi…

Sextorters are using sexually explicit deepfakes to harm children online. The #OPP and Protect Children have critical information about AI-based risks for parents and educators to share with the youth in your life.

Incredibly proud to see the hard work of our very own Monique St. Germain (she/her) highlighted by Lexpert, talking about the diverse and challenging work our legal team does every day. lexpert.ca/news/in-house-…

Cybertip.ca has processed ~4K sexually explicit deepfake images of children in the past year. C3P's Signy Arnason explains we desperately need regulation. "There are serious traumatic repercussions for the impacted teen... we need people to take this more seriously."

Our response to online safety cannot be to only act when a crime has been committed. The goal has to be to detect and limit the very well-understood and predictable dangers that injure children in digital spaces. We must regulate big tech. protectchildren.ca/en/press-and-m…

There is mounting evidence showing the harmful effects of excessive cellphone use on student learning, well-being, and online safety. We're glad that MB is joining other provinces to help students. protectchildren.ca/en/press-and-m…

Great article from NBC. “It does not appear the platform itself is taking adequate proactive steps to curb the spread of CSAM on their service despite its known use for facilitating the exchange of this type of material,” Stephen Sauer

We are talking about extremely harmful, violent & in many cases, illegal material shared on well-known platforms. THIS CAN STOP. We need gov'ts to regulate online platforms. Until it is legislated, tech will not prioritize the safety of survivors & children.
