We love doing 15-min counts (with the ButterflyCount app, see also butterfly-monitoring.net) and I wondered what was the most species-rich count we did. It proved to be 26 species this spring in Spain, but would have been very difficult without the help of IMaculinea. 1/

Hands up if you love hairstreaks 🙋 One of the latest butterflies in the UK to emerge, the brilliant Brown Hairstreak flies from mid-July to mid-September around hedges, sunny woodland rides, and scrubby areas where their caterpillar food plant Blackthorn can be found.

For the second time this year, EBG members travelled to Romania recently to continue our survey work for the endangered Danube Clouded Yellow (Colias myrmidone). The 2nd brood of DCY emerged very early this year - they were on the wing in July, so we only saw the tail-end...(1/#)

We're still in quiet shock and awe that our brilliant orchid tour leader, Dr Richard Bate, recently found the ultimate woodland wraith, Britain's first Ghost Orchid to be recorded since 2009. Superb work, Richard!

Today was arrivals day for our Autumn Wildlife in Valencia tour, led by Bird Watching Spain & Jon Dunn 🇺🇦. Our group has hit the ground running with an afternoon spent in the paddyfields - many highlights included dozens of Collared Pratincole, and our first flaming Plain Tigers.

Our first full day in the field here for our Autumn in Valencia tour was a brilliant one y'day - with new dragonflies and butterflies for many of us seen. Two particular highlights were African species at the very edge of their world range - Black Percher, and Desert Orange Tip.

Coot and Moorhen just levelled up! Two birding highlights from today on our Autumn Wildlife in Valencia tour - Red-knobbed Coot, and Western Swamphen. Throw in Bonelli's Eagles, Black Wheatear, and Blue Rock Thrush, and it's been a colourful and exciting day's birding.

Our superb Valencia native guide, Pau Lucio, was on top dragonfly and damselfly finding form today - 11 species seen well and photographed by our group, including both Violet and Orange-winged Dropwing. 💜🧡
