There are many reasons why "family-sized" units aren't being built, but one contributing factor is that our zoning codes punish larger units. In many (most?) cities, parking requirements escalate with each bedroom—even though your kids probably don't need a space!

My view: "To bring down housing costs, we must build, build, build" (including The Guthrie, post haste) bozemandailychronicle.com/opinions/guest… #mtpol

Many public comments re: The Guthrie (a new Affordable Housing development in Midtown #bozeman) describe renters as transient and dangerous. E.g. Laura S. writes "Guthrie is a paradise for predators."

YIMBY Twitter: what do you do when good people act like NIMBYs? Pretend like all NIMBYs are good people? Lump ‘em in with the rest? Avoid the NIMBY epithet altogether?

Happy #EarthDay2024 “Transportation” (automobiles) is California’s single biggest contributor—by far—to GHG emissions (40%). Tires+roads are also tied for 1st as a source of microplastics in oceans and rivers (35%). Cars are also used to kill ~350million animals a year in the US.

In 2022 and 2023, 1272 new apartment units came online in Bozeman—more than the five preceding years combined. Vacancy rates went up. Relative to 3.4% inflation in 2023, rents went down 3.1%. …gistarweb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/attach…

Measuring the entropy of 100 cities around the world using the orientation of streets. In the chart below, they are sorted by descending φ from most to least grid-like (equivalent to least to greatest entropy). [full paper: buff.ly/3kepB9p]

36 years after Apple introduced the Trash bin with the GS/OS operating system, Esri has added a recycle bin to ArcGIS Online. Better late than never?

Anchorage just legalized 3+ home on every lot and abandoned costly parking mandates. Dear City of Bozeman, MT the best time to have made similar changes was decades ago but there's no time like the present! alaskasnewssource.com/2024/06/26/anc…

If only NHSTA was interested in the thousands of deaths a year caused by unsafe road design and ever larger, heavier, more powerful vehicles. Pedestrian deaths have been skyrocketing for 15 years and NHTSA has done *nothing* to stop them.

The places where we should be building housing (infill) will almost always be proximate to neighbors who don't want new housing nearby. Bozeman's new City Commission is big on placating the neighbors—consistently rejecting the housing projects our community needs.

“I’m sorry if we build a little bit and it has an impact on someone’s perfect neighborhood because people aren’t even able to survive right now. So I guess my sympathies are quite low.” - Montana State Senator Daniel Zolnikov (R)

So glad to see Bozeman finally advertising Butte! A vigorous tourism campaign for Butte might actually bring down housing prices in Bozeman. 🤣

I interrupt this 93°F degree day to share this cheery #bozeman outlook based on IPCC data. (See how hosed your city is: fitzlab.shinyapps.io/cityapp/ )
