Why do horror movie jump scares usually combine sight and sound? New research suggests that a multimodal threat - one consisting of a looming auditory AND a looming visual cue - triggers a stronger defensive response - longer hiding time (in mice, anyway). sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Is the jump scare a simulated circa-strike? According to predatory immimence theory, defensive behaviors change with proximity of threat, from pre-encounter (anxiety) to post-encounter (fear) to circa-strike (panic). These map on nicely to the building blocks of horror movies.
