🪱 Root-knot nematodes #RKN and potato cyst nematodes #PCN rank 1 and 2 in the Top🔟of high-impact plant-parasitic #nematodes and they are emerging due to global warming & genetic selection🌡️🔬 #NEMEMERGE will provide sustainable science-based solutions🎯nem-emerge.eu

🌡️🔬Global warming and host genetic selection are the2⃣main factors responsible for the emergence of #PCN & #RKN nematode species. There is an urgent need to find sustainable solutions to counteract these problem in the main food crops most affected, tomato & potato #NEMEMERGE

🌱#NEMEMERGE will provide a spectrum of sustainable, science-based solutions for both the convensional & organic #farming sector based on the principels of Integrated Pest Management #IPM👇🏽 These solutions will be proposed based on #codesign with multiple actors🤝#nematodes

🐛Only a minority of #nematodes do harm. However, nematicides are very non-specific and can kill them all. It is necessary to keep most of the nematode community intact🌱 💪🏾Let's change the way we fertilise the soil to make a step forward for #biodiversity #BiodiversityDay

✅#NEMEMERGE will provide a transition to sustainable farming along with the development of environmentally friendly, non-GM solutions that counteract the increased virulence of the two most devastating plant parasitic #nematodes. We will address 6️⃣ specific #Objectives👇🏽Wageningen U&R

#NEMEMERGE #ambitions 🪱To prevent the proliferation of invasive #nematodes predictive #tools based on soil temperature variation and #climate models will be developed: ✅Specific & robust diagnostic markers for accurate detection and monitoring ✅Maps & prediction scenarios

#NEMEMERGE #ambitions 🍅For the R gene, which encodes a temperature-sensitive immune receptor, to be resistant to #RKN, will be provided: ✅Knowledge on the effect of #temperature ✅Proof-of-principle of this strategy for wider applications ✅Novel variants #nematodes #tomato

#NEMEMERGE #ambitions ✅ The project will re-sequence virulent #RKN and #PCN populations using state-of-the art NGS technologies to understand the breaking of #resistance and to develop effective diagnostic tools linked to virulence 🐛 #nematodes #tomato #potato #HorizonEU

#NEMEMERGE #ambitions Knowledge on nematophagous fungi and bacteria at field level could boost the suppressive potential against #RKN & #PCN 🪱 ✅We will identify microbial indicators linked to #soil #suppression which will be used for the development of diagnostic marker sets.
