Jonathan Eaton was an exceptional scholar and a wonderful mentor. Cecilia Fieler and I wrote an intellectual obituary describing his academic work and legacy that was just posted on VoxEU. cepr.org/voxeu/columns/…

Outstanding essay on the worldwide plummeting birth rates and the coming demographic winter by J. Fernández-Villaverde. The 2023 fertility rates are astonishing, e.g: - South Korea: 0.72 - Colombia and Chile: 1.2 - Argentina and Brazil: 1.4 - Turkey: 1.51 spectator.co.uk/article/the-gl…

It seems a lot of fake profiles have been created on X to follow people. I have never ever been followed by women in suggestive clothing as has happened recently! It’s obviously a way to artificially boost numbers.

What a fun read, this interview with Nobel Laureate (and my former colleague) Gene Fama. "All of economics is a behavioral science. The difference is whether you think the behavior is rational or irrational." ft.com/content/ec06fe…

One of my favourite authors! Close your eyes and pick any book. Though, I always start with the first In Zanadu?). You’ll read some books again and again.

The times (in behavioural sciences) they are a-changin'. Recent contributions in cognitive science and economics show a renewed interest in going beyond 'biases' and viewing the sometimes puzzling features of human cognition as solutions to the complex problems we face.

I'm excited to release a new working paper today. When we paid people ~$20, they were 13pp more likely to take the Covid Booster shot. This guaranteed financial incentive worked better than lottery and charitable incentives in our large, pre-registered field experiment.

Though there are amazing outliers. This is so true. Go to any conference and see people looking at name tag’s and reputation. Top tier, eat together and hang together. It’s all about top five journals and top ten departments!

Is it a generational thing? I have had this experience with two junior co-authors. Gave them an idea, helped execute it, wrote a skeleton draft for the paper and they only had to do the empirical analysis. They had little interest in the project, no desire to improve it. Nothing.

The power of a small hand held gadget. In the old days one would sit on a bench in a public place. Wish the people around and maybe have a chat. Now, either someone has ear-pods or are busy texting. No one smiles at each other, talk the weather or simply enjoy the sunshine.
