The latest Greenhouse Gas Emissions data is out, and they are fricken awful. Since the Albanese govt was elected, emissions have *increased*.

The “primary conclusion” of the latest five-year, 600-page Great Barrier Reef report is the same as all the previous reports, back to 2009, says Professor Terry Hughes: Climate change is the number one destroyer of corals. satpa.pe/NVo5Jem

Of course, the USA’s coral reefs are also reeling from anthropogenic heating. Because it’s global. The only viable solution is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. (Picture of a cooked coral nursery in Florida from 2023).

Remember when introducing cane toads to Australia was considered to be “a low risk option”? Governance of coral reef interventions is poor and outdated. cell.com/one-earth/pdf/…

Florida has become an epicenter of coral restoration but if success is measure by the amount of live coral on the reef, the campaign is in dire straights “If the coal mine is the Keys, the canary is dead" my latest, w/ amazing photos by Jason Gulley huffpost.com/entry/coral-re…

One of the best news articles I have read that explains some of the complexity and limitations of coral reef restoration… (Spoiler: prevention is better than “cure”).

A reminder that Gladstone is the gateway to the southern Great Barrier Reef, which experienced mass mortality of corals earlier this year.

A tourist posted a stunning photo on X today of a turtle, swimming on the Great Barrier Reef. Now zoom in, to see in the background what an unintended random sample of corals looks like. (The corals are mostly dead, but the Reef is ‘pristine’, because someone saw a turtle)

A government weakening vital environmental protections in order to secure support from a Coalition which habitually denies the reality of climate change … is a government which has lost its way.

It’s a total myth that lethal levels of coral bleaching in 2024 have only occurred in the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef. For the 1st time, severe bleaching occurred throughout the Northern, Central and Southern regions. Only the Far North escaped this time.

“If the land is excluded from Australia’s greenhouse accounts, the emissions cut since 2005 is paltry – just 1.3%. Which is a long way from the Albanese government’s legislated 43% target.”

‘Em, emissions from long-haul flights…. The elephant in the room: The last thing the Great Barrier Reef needs is a million tourists pretending to be “citizen scientists”.
