Here, along the Virginia shore of the Potomac River, US Army troops hastily retreated toward Harrison Island on October 21, 1861 after engaging Confederates outside the town of Leesburg. Among the dead was Col. Edward Baker - the only US Senator killed in battle.

The last time folks shared widespread misinformation and hatred toward Haitians in this country, racist paranoia spurred the assembly of arsenals and the white militia groups that occupied them. The “don’t tear down our history” crowd seems to have learned little from these sites

As a public historian, and someone who has actually interacted with and interviewed eyewitnesses, family members and friends of those lost on September 11, 2001, I can say the wreckage from that day is not limited to planes and buildings. Think before you type.

This monument to the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue stands in downtown Savannah, GA, dedicated to the Haitian soldiers who fought alongside colonials during the American Revolution, shortly before they waged their own war. These men built 2 countries on the battlefield.
