Parking mandates are often completely arbitrary. In many cities, officials simply copy standards from neighboring cities without actually researching the implications of those standards for their community or tailoring standards to fit local needs.

It’s that time of year where tens of thousands of New Englanders flock to cute walkable towns all across New England that have been illegal to build anywhere else.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via Streetsblog USA usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/29/pro…

A lot of people are intimidated by municipal finance, believing that they need a financial background to understand it. That’s not the case, though. In fact, the people in city hall who work and vote on municipal budgets generally don’t have that kind of background, either.

This headline goes hard. (And so does the reporting.) Yet another exhibit for the ever-growing "State DOT public engagement is theater in service of a predetermined conclusion" file. strongtowns.org/journal/2024/9…

1920 > 2024 for us, but it’s the same house. We just helped it become what it wanted to be in 1920 but didn’t quite know how. But it had a series of unfortunate events in a student rental conversion in recent times, which definitely didn’t help.

You can’t change someone’s psychology by telling them to slow down. When faced with environments that are designed for fast driving and no pedestrians, people are going to drive fast and not look for pedestrians.

Green bling is normally fake green. Will this building still be here in 100 years? If not, it probably isn’t very sustainable

Great example of how contemporary yet traditional, 'urban fabric' architecture can: - Harmoniously blend in a historical district - Tick all the boxes for beauty - Still have a contemporary 'feel' Great work in general!

Architecture has since Roman times been most often clothed in something different from the structure. Architects insistent on just structure & services are essentially asking for just skeletons & guts. Design fully humane buildings instead.
