In Uganda, only 42.7% of Grade 6 students were proficient in English in 2023. Since 2022, the “UCatchUp” programme has used local languages to boost literacy with promising results.

In 2022, at least one out of seven young people and adults still lacked basic literacy skills. Literacy is a right, the future depends on it. Ongoing professional development for teachers and school leaders is key to literacy improvement.
