This is my list of introductory books for non-academics who want to read about the British empire. Beyond this I'd have long secondary lists of books by top academics who write appealing clear prose like Kirsty Warren, Katie Donington Margot Finn and many others

If you ask : what is the value of the humanities? I would say that it teaches you to read with acuity, to analyse wild claims, to argue responsibly to questions to which there are no right answers. Do we need the humanities? Let’s hear it for yes!!!

The saddest news. Helen was inimitable. A champion of others & wisest of colleagues.
