Operation Neptune, the naval component of Overlord, not only included the cross-Channel movement of materiel and amphibious landings, but mine sweeping and fire and logistics support. The flow of 715,000 Allied troops into France initiated the liberation of Western Europe.

#OTD in 1944, American carriers and Curtiss SB2C-1 “Helldiver” bombers from Task Force 58 bombard Chichi Jima. The Bonin Islands, of which Chichi Jima is a part, were of strategic importance in the Pacific War because the archipelago lies 500 miles from mainland Japan.
