Human Rights is a force for change.
I pay tribute to the human rights and environmental defenders for their enormous contribution to making the world a better place.

We must not turn a blind eye to #EnforcedDisappearance . I pledge to continue to support States in their efforts to eradicate and prevent this terrible crime, and to support victims and their families in the daily struggle for truth and justice.

I am reminded of beautiful celebrations I have been able to join, and to let the light within each of us shine bright for those who need it – light that brings healing and peace.

Violence is never a solution.

I call for open dialogue and an end to the use of force against protesters.

We need to renew the social contract and rebuild societies with a healthy civic space where people can express grievances without fear of repression.

We are failing women and children. We must get back on track to reach the Global Goals and achieve real progress. We need strong investment from all sectors to ensure equal rights and opportunities for every woman, child & adolescent.

Global crises particularly affect the most vulnerable and marginalised in our societies -- a huge setback for human rights, pushing millions more into poverty since COVID.

This #PovertyDay , I urge concrete action to reduce inequalities & lift people out of poverty.

I am honored to take up my functions today as UN Human Rights Chief. At a time of growing challenges for human rights around the world, I will be guided by the impact we can have on people and their daily lives to fulfill the promise of the #UDHR .
