Old coal mines, bio fuel, landfill & cows - we rank the UK's highest emitters of the potent greenhouse gas, methane, in our latest article in The Guardian theguardian.com/environment/ar…

UK government is pledged to cut methane emissions by a third in the next 6 years but has no firm plan how to achieve this nor does it have a clear picture of what current methane emissions are.🧵1/11

. Doug Parr of Greenpeace UK told us how critical cutting methane emissions is if we are to slow the pace of climate change but explained, "a proper British action plan has yet to materialise". 2/11 theguardian.com/environment/ar…

Methane from farms/industry/landfill is a massive problem. I've mapped the UK's emissions hotspots but there's a scrap over whether the official gov figures are worth the paper they're written on... theguardian.com/environment/ar… Explore the map: watershedinvestigations.com/home/find-out-…

watershed_investigations The Guardian '“. that methane emissions from oil .. gas operations .. higher than are reported in official statistics,” said Liam Hardy,.. analyst at Green Alliance. “Now the combination of better modelling and satellite data shows that .. worse than we thought. A particular tragedy is how high on our top 100 most methane polluted sites the South Downs National Park came. The major source identified in the NAEI is oil & gas exploration in the South Downs. Makes you wonder what the purpose of protected areas is. 🧵

Alarming though these methane emissions are, the true figure may be even higher: a report by Royal Society of Chemistry concludes NAEI models underestimate methane release. Green Alliance says methane from oil & gas works can be 11-70 times higher than reported. theguardian.com/environment/ar…

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas which the UK is pledged to cut by 1/3. It can also have significant health impacts - something we explored in our article on landfill pollution. theguardian.com/environment/ar…

Yet another industry whining that they're not allowed to just pollute with impunity - if we keep on allowing such recklessness, there will be no wild salmon left.

As questions are raised of the Sicilian government as to why preparations were not made, despite decades of warnings that climate change would destroy the island's water security, worth considering how well prepared the UK is. I think you can guess the answer.

- hatchery fish were used in these protected streams - a measure questioned by many, but which seems to have been effective here. - non-native species of fish introduced for fishing were outcompeting the trout, barriers were introduced to restrict these. sportsmensalliance.org/news/apache-tr…

In a European context, non-native fish escaping from aquaculture can present similar challenges. theguardian.com/environment/20…

In a UK context, many emphasize the importance of incorporating the detailed knowledge of individual rivers held by people who work with & use rivers locally, could make action to restore biodiversity more effective. rossgazette.com/news/mixed-can…
