Great to hear that 24 Whopper Swans stopped off at Ennerdale yesterday on their mammoth migration from Iceland. They fly at high altitude and make the 1500km trip in one go, no stops. Thanks to Peter Ulrich for the sightings and picture.

If you are up at the head of the valley and see large bags filled with stone, its the dedicated National Trust staff of the Fix the Fells Team. In a couple of weeks the stone will be flown by helicopter onto the high mountain paths to improve the surfacing and reduce erosion.

Whilst surveying the medieval shielings 1800ft up at Great Cove this week we were joined by an inquisitive little stoat who seemed to have made its home in the old wall foundations. We love it when wild nature decides to hang around and watch.

The shorter daylight and cooler nights are a sign to the trees that Autumn is coming. Many birch in the valley have started displaying yellow leaves. We can't wait for this years colourful display.

The hot weather is continuing so remember to be prepared with water and sun protection. Ennerdale's forests provide natural shelter from the heat. Get the free valley visitor map here wildennerdale.co.uk/visit/

Ennerdale Lake and the River Liza have both seen plenty of water lately. Autumn maybe just around the corner but the summer rains have kept everything green and fresh.

Hair-like tendrils on this native sundew that is found across the valley are tipped with glistening droplets that attract insects. The 'dew' is very sticky, trapping the insect; the sundew's tendrils curl inwards to engulf it. Its a great plant to photograph with your macro lens

We have had an expert invertebrate specialist surveying in the valley. As well as many other species he found a thriving population of mountain bumble bees. Its Latin name is Bombus monticola. This loosely translates as ‘the booming mountaineer’, what a great name!

Some of the steep slopes on the north facing slopes under Pillar seem to be greening up with natural tree regeneration. We need to carry out a survey of what species and how they are doing. Any climbers interested in helping?

The valley head tree and shrub planting is looking really healthy despite the Spring drought. We hope this will be the seed source for a future tree'd landscape across the head of the valley.

We visited the valley head planting enclosure in June. It was great to see butterflies and damselflies darting around the areas of wetland.

This native woodland regeneration is benefitting from being on the north facing slope of Crag meaning its not receiving as much heat as south facing slopes on these long hot summer days.

Moths may not always be as colourful as butterflies. We think this is a Silver Ground Carpet Moth and very splendid its is in its silver colour.
