Our Animal Health team annually trains the Burrowing Owl Field team in essential techniques. Recently, Carmen, one of our RVTs, led a session on safely collecting blood samples from wild owlets. This knowledge-sharing is vital to recovering this endangered species. Thanks, team!

We’re excited to welcome the last of the 2024 burrowing owlets—bringing this year's total to 26! They'll spend winter at the Archibald Biodiversity Centre, getting the care they need for their spring 2025 release. 🦉 Here’s one receiving a health check before heading to the ABC.

Do you know what these tiny backpacks are for? 🦉 As part of our head-starting program, we attach small satellite transmitters to burrowing owls to track their movements after release. 🌍 #WilderTogether

With a name like greater sage-grouse, it’s no surprise they love sagebrush! In spring and summer, this prairie bird's diet includes insects and forbs, but in fall and winter, they rely almost entirely on sagebrush leaves—an adaptation unique to them. 🌿 #WilderTogether

Camera traps are vital for monitoring wildlife. Equipped with infrared detectors, they capture vibrant color photos and videos by day and use infrared light for monochrome images at night. 📸 Here, a field technician checks a camera trap during Vancouver Island marmot fieldwork.

Did you know... During their fall migration, whooping cranes from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo population travel nearly 4,000 kilometers from the Gulf Coast of Texas to Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada. This incredible journey takes them about 45 days to complete! #wildertogether

In Canada, black-tailed prairie dogs are found exclusively in Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan. Within the park's distinctive terrain—featuring rolling hills, rugged coulees, and steep ravines—lies the habitat these prairie dogs call home. 🌾#WilderTogether

This summer, our Horticulture team made the Archibald Biodiversity Centre (ABC) leafier than ever! 🌿 They planted 16,000 willow saplings to create shelterbelts that will protect habitats from Alberta’s harsh winter and provide sustainable browse for animals residing at the ABC.

Alongside our partners, we are committed to fostering collaborative relationships to safeguard wildlife and their habitats. A prime example of this is the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary meeting in Ghana, where people come together to work towards this shared goal.
