Yesterday, I was in chilly Vancouver following a great conference #KSObesity24. Today, I'm at the beach watching dolphins leaping in the surf while i enjoy an evening swim. It's a small world and so good to be able to travel and chat to people breaking the boundaries.

On International Women's Day, I'd like to thank Patsy Munroe for being an excellent mentor. Her drive to excel in biomedical science in a time when it was very much an old-boy's network gave me the fire to try. I raise a G&T to you.

Research funding in NZ was a sinking lid on a pot that was already small compared to most OECD countries. Now crusher Collins is sticking the national science challenge cash in Luxons' back pocket and hoping business R&D will keep this hayride rollin. Falling apart at the seams.

Nice read with my morning coffee. Lots to ponder on regarding implications for IGF-II peptide activity in metabolic disease.

Nature open access publication fee 11k USD. That's 18.5kNZD. To put that into context; the publication grants I've seen are 1-2kNZD. Even prestigious research grants in NZ have a suggested limit of 25k for annual research budget.

Things are hotting up for anti obesity drugs and the complexity of the body's machinery for regulating energy intake use and storage programmed to maximize survival means we need more complex approaches to making drugs. nature.com/articles/s4158…

17h flight down, 7h flight to go. Looking forward to #ECE2024 in Stockholm. Even remembered to schedule a little jetlag recovery time for a change.

First full day and poster presentation is done but jetlag still with me. Great reminder of how our physiology is impacted by circadian rhythms. The sun is shining here in Stockholm, hopefully, I can stay awake longer this evening and try to reset my daily hormonal cycles.

Thanks to Giles Yeo, O'Neill Lab, Daniel Fazakerley, and Fiona Gribble, for your time over the last couple of days. Got lots of ideas to take back to NZ and hopefully some collaborations in the future. It's been a blast!

These are not new ideas, but cherry-picked examples, those that have proven successful overseas. We need a much better framework to get the most out of limited resources. Funding is top of the list. We can't take more cuts, already been cut for decades. auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2024/0…
