The Padres stuck Jurickson Profar in left, and he's producing like the guy he replaced. No, that won't last. He's not Juan Soto. But he's becoming an integral figure on these 2024 Padres (even if he really doesn't care much about his own relevance).

Jake Cronenworth broke the game open with a grand slam off Fernando Cruz, one of the toughest relievers in baseball this season. The Padres lead 6-2. Again, Jurickson Profar helped key the rally. He is 4-for-4.

Six innings of two-run ball for Joe Musgrove, whose day is done after 87 pitches. Maybe the sharpest he's been all season (and he did so without making much use of his signature slider, which has been off lately). He struck out nine, got 14 whiffs and surrendered four hits.

Trading Juan Soto, then telling Jurickson Profar to become Juan Soto was certainly an outside-the-box strategy, but...

Profar, a $1 million signing at the start of Spring Training, is 3-for-3 today, 7-for-11 this series and .336/.426/.518 on the season.

Machado, I guess, has a knack for being robbed in that exact spot. In addition to Jones in the World Baseball Classic, he was also robbed by Sam Hilliard there last April.

Game 34: Reds at Padres (Ashcraft vs. Musgrove), 1:10 p.m. PT at Petco Park

Bogaerts gets the day off, and Ha-Seong Kim bats 8th for a second consecutive game. Graham Pauley is DH-ing and in the No. 5 spot.

Yu Darvish is back and delivered precisely what the Padres — and their beleaguered rotation — needed last night.

In a bizarre sequence, Mike Shildt actually chose to take a Padres run off the board. The math said it was the right call, but it still couldn't have been an easy decision.

Manny Machado promptly rewarded his manager's faith.

Mike Shildt cited two factors in his decision here:

1. 'My Charlotte-Mecklenburg public education'

2. 'I'm going to bet on Manny Machado'

Final: Padres 6, Reds 4

Yu Darvish returned with five scoreless. Manny Machado hit a three-run double -- a batter after Mike Shildt's gutsy call to trade a run for an extra out. Robert Suarez nailed down his MLB-leading 10th save. The Padres' losing streak ends at 5.

Reds manager David Bell just got run for arguing balls and strikes. On his way out, he kicked that bulky batting donut in the on-deck circle basically the entire length of the dugout. Honestly, kinda impressive.

Interesting one: Jake Cronenworth hit an RBI groundout but also earned a catcher's interference. Mike Shildt essentially had the choice to take the out and the run or to load the bases for Manny Machado and take the run off the board. He took the latter.
