Helena sweeps the season series with Pelham and gets another shutout win. The Huskies attack gets plenty of time to shine tonight as they finished chances in open field, off set pieces and at the penalty spot with six goal tonight.

I may have only gotten to work with Chris Laatsch for one of those 26 years, but that doesn’t mean I’ll miss him any less. He isn’t just an incredible coach, but a gem of a human and an incredible advocate for this county. Orange Beach is getting the best of the best.

When Spain Park had an opening several years ago, I said this guy should be the only one on the list. He and his family have been wonderful to me and my wife and this community. I will miss working with him, but Orange Beach High School is getting the best and I am happy for him.

A head coach for 26 years in Shelby County at Briarwood, Helena and Spain Park, Chris Laatsch is leaving an area he has called home for 48 of his 52 years to take on a new challenge as the next head coach of Orange Beach High School.

It's a big night of area baseball tonight with five of our seven games having area stakes. Helena can polish off a perfect area season with a win and Montevallo can claim the area title if it comes back and sweeps tonight's doubleheader.

I still know coaches I respect who may not agree and I know several who do, but I've witnessed enough cringeworthy moments that ruin the game to feel strong in my opinion.

Sharing this column from 2019 after the AHSAA approved the use of a shot clock yesterday for non-area games. It needs to become permanent for every game, but this is a huge step.
