Andy West just finished ‘The Life Inside’. Wonderful, thoughtful, touching example of philosophy in the public sphere. Highly recommended!

Thank you to everyone who came down to The Social last night. There’s something about the place that draws out the best conversations; last night’s was shame, freedom, bodily protest, and Diogenes. Obviously. Matt Rowland Hill and Andy West are a class act.

'I confess to persistent envy while reading The Life Inside about the urgency that philosophical questions have in West’s classrooms.'

I will be down the The Social TONIGHT, talking desire, faith, shame, body as protest, all the good stuff with Matt Rowland Hill and Andy West. Richard Norris will be DJing after, and the stellar Real Magic Books will be selling books. Fiver in!

“public philosophy isn’t about delivering answers to people, as if they were mere passive recipients of wisdom, but about inciting them to be active wonderers in their own lives.” my review of Andy West’s wonderful memoir: thephilosopher1923.org/post/doing-phi…

Maggie Nelson once said she writes for herself and for strangers. I’ve only ever been able to write if it was for someone I love. This is beautiful piece by ⁦⁦Matt Rowland Hill⁩ on how that love gets you through the writing and through the days. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

To my followers who are interested in detention: I read the essay that love lay down beside me and we wept is based on and I know ⁦Dr Helen Murray Taylor⁩ is writing a beautiful and darkly funny story of the human soul in extremis. Please back it if you can. unbound.com/books/love-lay…

I’m teaching a group of prisoners atm who have all read my book and the anthropological lens has been turned around. Halfway through a discussion on freewill vs fate a man asks me, ‘Is your brother still doing ok?’ I answer yes and he goes back to telling me his ideas.

“The harder the crime is to understand – and the hardest is intra-familial sexual abuse, which is also the most common sort of contact abuse – the more likely it is to go undetected.” ⁦ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
