'China denied generating overcapacity and accuses the EU of protectionism. Xi Jinping reiterated that position in talks with Macron, saying there is no capacity issue viewed from the perspective of comparative advantage or global market demand.'

Twenty years since central and eastern Europe joined the EU. It's been a huge success, with the annual pay gap with western Europe falling from $25,000 to $15,000, and more than five million people migrating over the borders that were closed under the Iron Curtain.

Fiscal transfers from the west to the east remain one of the EU's biggest but under-celebrated successes. But a rising tide 'lifted the boats' mostly in the capital cities in CEE, much less so across the regions.

Interesting analysis from Bloomberg.

In 2017, Macron’s call for EU strategic autonomy was prescient. The world has become more unfriendly to the EU’s naïve model of economic openness. Fair diagnosis - but in key areas his Sorbonne 2.0 speech presents a contradictory and unbalanced economic vision for Europe.🧵

.Emmanuel Macron warned today that the European Union and the European model of civilisation could “die” unless steps were taken in the next 5 years to create a European “power” which protected itself from Russian military aggression & Chinese & American protectionism. Thread 1/
