A sensitive reader of ancient poetry in the original will appreciate the surprising beauty and effectiveness of sense-enjambment without instant metrical continuity (synapheia).
Practice was surely variable; but in e.g. Iliad 1-2, metre demands a pause after the short -os of v1.
