Today the Forestry Commission deer team go big ! We are doing three deer training events,we are in Norfolk,Durham and Cumbria. All three of us giving the same message.Which is in certain areas we have far too many deer and their impacts are having a negative impact on the landscape !

This is brilliant. The industry as a whole is not great at positive self promotion. However, this is a really good example of something that can be done quickly and cheaply and have a positive effect at the local level. Bronwin & Abbey Ltd

Really enjoyed listening to this discussion from Forestry Journal this morning. Well worth anybody who has an interest in forestry spending 20 mins giving it a listen. Would love to see it as a podcast. This could then be downloaded and listened to offline.

Richard Broughton 🇺🇦 I’ve an anecdotal hunch that a ‘commercial’ conifer plantation is catnip to anyone who’s just visited ancient forest in Eastern Europe

This is the evidence of what we really already know. It still feels as wet now in places, as it did at the end of the winter. No wonder we are struggling to extract timber.

I don’t normally post about football as I try and keep this account for work related matters but I couldn’t resist tonight! 🦊🦊🦊

Really really recommend the RFS & RSFS woodland meetings.

Unique opportunity to visit forests & woodlands and learn about the how & why of their management, and to ask questions directly to the local forester.

I spent the afternoon today leading a woodland walk on behalf of a long term client in Cambridgeshire. The time was spent informing the local community about the future ash dieback management work in the SSSI. The botanist that joined the group found amongst others, herb-paris.

Well said sir! Effective landscape based deer culling needs coordinating, also targeting the right sex.Deer don't just affect the woodlands, they can be an issue across the wider landscape. We need to promote the benefits of consuming venison to the general public.

Personally I think the higher predator argument does not work in the UK - to many conflicting land use issues. However, this video highlights the problems of over population of deer.

Farming today - tree and forestry week. An overview and problems associated with ash dieback. Appropriate, as whilst I listened I am felling diseased ash trees. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’ve just given it a couple of listens through. I have to say I’m really confused about the messaging . At times the view points are contradictory. What do others think?

🌧️🌧️I started yesterday am nr Ipswich - dry, ground conditions good and hard. I then traveled to Northants to our current site. Hardly stopped raining yesterday - nearly 10mm. Ground conditions saturated again. Such a contrast in a little over 100 miles. Dave Throup Dan Holley
