Since 2014, in Skopje, fake neoclassical buildings and tacky monuments eclipse the “brutalist” legacy of Yugoslavia. This controversial 'urbicide' exposes the nationalistic tensions in Macedonia, a country in search of identity that does not want to be seen as a periphery. 11/12

Skopje’s Central Post Office (1974-82) reflects the sunset. Janko Konstantinov’s creative tripartite design is a fantastical blend of rationalist metabolism. A submarine-watchtower-alien encrusted with more recent builds and A/C units adding to a sense of space oddity. 10/12

Kenzo Tange’s 1965 winning masterplan for rebuilding Skopje after a devastating earthquake consisted of a “City Gate” and a “City Wall” (pictured here). Parts of the masterplan were built by Yugoslav architects, such as the main train station. 9/12

Outside Skopje, amidst picturesque hillscapes, the small church of Saint Panteleimon presents wall paintings, quite unique in coloring, composition, and expression, that are outstanding examples of Byzantine medieval monumental art in the late 12th century. 8/12
