BREEDING AT BIRCH AQUARIUM: They’ve maintained the gold standard for 25 yrs with AZA accreditation. The breeding programs at Birch Aquarium UC San Diego include little blue penguins, sea stars, and weedy sea dragons. This #Earth8 report shows how they help many species. @cbs8

Moray Eels use these additional jaws — aka pharyngeal jaws — to help eat their prey whole. Their front jaws grasp their prey and their pharyngeal jaws spring forward and move it down their throat.

Birch Aquarium is hosting María Fernandez from Gran Acuario Mazatlán in Mazatlán, Mexico — the largest aquarium in Mexico that focuses on animals local to the Sea of Cortez. María is spending a month with us volunteering with our Husbandry Team!
