I’m so impressed with and inspired by this convening that Black In Environ put together. It was really special. Thank you for letting me be part of it.

pjlo At Howard we’ve been very deliberate in building a department with faculty with PhDs in the field AND discipline, dedicated to developing disciplinary work. As “Black/Africana Studies” label gets trendy, we’re prepared to fight everybody to keep working. static1.squarespace.com/static/51e1f76…

I was told in no uncertain terms, by dozens of folk, “do not get a degree in AfAm Studies, esp a PhD, the other disciplines won’t ’recognize’ it.” These were folks in Black Studies departments and programs ☹️

My alma mater had something called an interdepartmental major. I did that for Africana Studies & Political Science, even though I had enough Africana Studies courses for it to be considered a major on its own. My BA degree only lists Poli Sci & I still feel salty about that.

Emil' Keme (Ki'che Maya) is a relative who I admire for his tenacity to stand in solidarity with his students. We continue to face injustices when our people fight against government systems that are leading such atrocities. I stand in solidarity with all my relatives in academia…
