Great but brief views of a ringtailed Hen Harrier at Potter Heigham Marshes at 10.30 this morning. Also Wheatear and Yellow Wagtail braving the raw, windy conditions. RareBirdAlertUK

Lovely day out around the Brecks today. 7 Stone Curlew, Tree Pipits, Firecrest, Marsh Tit, Goshawk, Woodlarks, and a host of newly arrived spring migrants made it a great day's birding.

After spending last weekend's migrant push in Manchester to watch Peter Kay, I managed to get out today for my first migrants of note. 5 Willow Warbler, 6 Whitethroat, 8 Sand Martin, and 9 Swallow, plus lots of commoner birds like Stonechat, Common Buzzard, and Linnet here.

It's not particularly easy to see Tree Sparrow in Norfolk these days, but Saturday's visit to WWT Welney provided some great opportunities to photograph them. Along with 500+ Whooper Swans still, 5 Cattle and 7 Great White Egrets, it proved to be a very pleasant lunch stop.

A nice spring-plumaged Water Pipit at Potter Heigham Marshes was the highlight to a fairly quiet morning. A booming Bittern, 2 Ravens, and 6 Cranes were nice to see/hear also. Other than Chiffchaff, still waiting for the summer migrants to arrive.

I had a lovely morning in The Brecks this morning. My first Raven for the area, 3 Hawfinch at Lynford, Great Grey Shrike at Weeting, Marsh Tits, and 3 Goshawks. I shall now spoil it all by watching play

Of interest, a colour-ringed that I photographed on the Norwich Research Park on 19 Feb 24 was a juvenile female, ringed in Elgin, Scotland on 13 Nov 23. It was subsequently sighted in Carlisle (!) on 25 Nov 23, before moving to the NRP.

Some great views of the Waxwings on the Norwich Research Park today. If you visit, please don't park on site (ANPR-enforced parking restrictions - £100 fine). Park on Old Watton Road and walk the short distance to the John Innes Conference Centre.

You'll have to take my word for it, but that's a Black Scoter at Holkham Bay. The Green-winged Teal showed much better (until if flew off!).

I really don't seem to be able to drive past Ludham without popping into St. Benet's Abbey to take more Short-eared Owl photos. Such a great place at the moment.

A leisurely afternoon around east Norfolk, starting with a Blackcap in the garden, then 7 Bewick's and 17 Whooper Swans at Ludham Airfield, 19 Cranes near Hickling, and finishing with a ring-tailed Hen Harrier at Potter Heigham Marshes. Not bad for a few hours birding!

Spent a few hours at Ketteringham Recycling Centre today and was rewarded with at least two 1cy Caspian Gulls, along with what might have been an adult. Kinda hard work, but worth it if you like gulls.

More great views of Short-eared and Barn Owls at St. Benet's Abbey, Ludham on Boxing Day. Must have been at least six SEO's.
