Importantly, this letter from the Hamilton trove, auctioned just last year, shows how Rosalind Franklin was unfairly pushed out. In it, her co-worker says, 'We have got rid of the young woman who was monopolising much of our data...'

Another letter from Rosalind Franklin's co-worker Maurice Wilkins to Francis Crick, sent the month of her anticipated talk to discuss their data in January 1953, goes some way in offering an explanation. It explains the misunderstanding, stating the talk was 'internal only'.

On this day in 1953, Nature published a double helix theory of DNA by Francis Crick and James Watson. In a newly found letter, Rosalind Franklin's co-worker said: 'Francis is...using all the data...he and Jim have got from here &...maintaining he has done it all by pure reason.'

Apparently 1,100+ books just isn't enough...
