Please read this phenomenal story by BiancaVázquezToness. It’s so easy to see a term like “chronic absenteeism” and think, “Oof, not good.” To truly comprehend the desperation, unfairness, & intractableness behind the stat requires reporting like this from The Associated Press. projects.apnews.com/features/2023/…
BiancaVázquezToness This story has stuck with me. I keep thinking about it. I didn’t know just how limited housing is in LA and elsewhere, & the power of renters with their names on leases and how they can squeeze these people or, worse, the impossibility of this woman getting into public housing.
NYC had ~72K students living 'doubled up' in shared apts last yr, a number likely to go up as families are kicked out of shelter and forced to find alternate housing.
BiancaVázquezToness gives a vivid + harrowing look from LA at what that can mean for kids: projects.apnews.com/features/2023/…

Spread the word! Have you heard? All across the nation... The Associated Press (The Associated Press) is looking for a new Race & Ethnicity reporter! In other words, I'm hiring! careers.ap.org/job/Newsperson…
'More than a quarter of students missed at least 10% of the 2021-22 school year, making them chronically absent. Before the pandemic, only 15% of students missed that much.
All told, an estimated 6.5 million additional students became chronically absent.' projects.apnews.com/features/2023/…
Nationwide, students have been absent at record rates since schools reopened after COVID-forced closures. More than a quarter of students missed at least 10% of the 2021-22 school year. Before the pandemic, only 15% of students missed that much school. projects.apnews.com/features/2023/…
Chronic absenteeism occurs when kids miss 10% or more of school days. In a 180-day school year, that means they're gone at least 18 days.
The rate has grown since the pandemic and appears not to be budging too much. Via The Associated Press:
