I'm glad to see the NYT Editorial Board drawing needed attention to our ongoing academic-recovery challenges today and noting the relevant insights from our Stanford University The Associated Press collaboration.

Students in my causal inference class have found the applied papers we read challenging to parse due to technical language.

Then we read Dee & Penner's 2017 RD paper on ethnic studies.

What a beautifully written paper that is both rigorous & accessible.

I'm glad to see a prominent education leader reflecting on evidence-based reform but concerned by the embrace of what looks like the controversial (discredited?) Visible Learning framework.

I was so grateful to talk with Tom Dee from Stanford University here. His research shines a light on kids who fell off the radar during COVID, or are hanging on for dear life. Data from 22-23 still emerging nationally but so far, OR is the first state not to show a rebound, per Dee.

Once again, other states show progress post-pandemic, while Oregon backslides.

This time it's a/b the shocking # of kids missing at least 16/17 days of school last year — 38%, including 45% of kindergarteners. It was 36% the previous year. 20% in 2019.

At the height of the pandemic, school closures disrupted many students’ lives. In 2022, nearly 16 million students across the U.S. were chronically absent, double the pre-pandemic truancy rate, according to a Stanford University analysis. to.pbs.org/3PvxRkr

'I [asked] teachers what they think has changed...One of their consistent themes was that they felt they could no longer hold students accountable academically or behaviorally because of pressure from snowplow parents & bad district policies.' Jessica Grose: nytimes.com/2023/10/04/opi…

Have classroom standards & accountability deteriorated? I spoke Jessica Grose:

“There is something enigmatic in the contradiction between increased high-school graduation and the many indicators that our students are struggling to re-engage in school.'
