We have a new episode out of our Stardust documentary series. Christine Bohan and I look at how important Thursday’s verdict is for families and survivors.

The original six episodes are still available for anyone who wants to hear the full Stardust story

This photo, taken after the Stardust fire, shows the immersion boiler in the hot press near the main bar.

The inquests jury determined said the fire started here, caused by an electrical fault, the first time a cause of the blaze has been determined.

A long read on this day of vindication for the families and victims of the Stardust fire. These young people were unlawfully killed. But it took families 43 years to get the truth. It’s a stain on Ireland that it took this long irishexaminer.com/news/arid-4136…

Random thought: one of the weird quirks of today's Stardust verdict is that hundreds of people watched it live on Zoom but no-one is allowed to screenshot or share court footage in Ireland - so none of it can ever be shared or watched again

I've tried to describe what it was like in the room when the Stardust verdict was announced.

I've been covering this story since 2019 when we made Stardust and my main thought is Ireland is just really bad at delivering justice for groups of people

It can now be reported for the first time how Stardust manger Eamon Butterly tried to stop the jury from being able to return a verdict of unlawful killing.

This ended up in the High Court on Holy Thursday - I was there, and it was extremely dramatic:

Dr Myra Cullinane ends the Stardust inquests by mentioning the 48 young people who died in the fire.

“It is their lives that we’ve sought to vindicate by means of these inquests”

She gets a standing ovation from the room.

A standing ovation in the room lasting almost a minute after coroner Dr Myra Cullinane pays tribute to the Stardust jury, saying it has been a “great act of public service”. Incredibly moving. Several of the jury members are crying.

A massive cheer broke out in the room when the foreman announced the verdict. A number of people hugged each other and there are a lot of people crying.

BREAKING: The jury at the Stardust inquests deliver a verdict of unlawful killing for all 48 victims who died in the fire. Absolutely huge.

Stardust jury say that doors in the Stardust were “locked, chained or otherwise obstructed”. When asked if this impeded the deceased from being able to exit through them, the foreman says yes.

Audible gasps in the room as the coroner reads the jury’s answer saying that the fire began in the hot press beside the dispensing bar in the Stardust, and was caused by an electrical fault. That is a huge moment. TheJournal.ie

Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane is now more than halfway through reading out the names of each of the 48 Stardust victims and confirming their place and cause of death with the jury foreman.

When she reaches the end, the jury will deliver their verdict.
