Used to think slum upgrading and affordable housing projects were impossible until I visited Mpazi Rehousing Project in City of Kigali great success story for many cities. The successful pilot is being rolled out. Thanks UN-Habitat ITDP Africa and City of Kigali for the opportunity

The Mpazi Rehousing Project increased the number of units on the site fourfold while improving living conditions and bringing more land into the public realm.

The City of #Kigali will continue to scale up this scheme that responds to the unique planning and construction challenges associated with building in dense, urban environments by introducing cost-effective solutions suitable for difficult terrains.

It was a learning experience for the delegates who greatly appreciated this model, and committed to do the same for their respective cities as slums in African cities are a common problem.

This afternoon, participants of the #TODConference2022 visited the rehousing project in Unplanned Settlement of Mpazi. We shared our experience of upgrading Mpazi area by creating decent homes within that perimeter, without compromising the space and well-being of dwellers.

President Kagame received Rory Stewart, President of GiveDirectly for a discussion on furthering collaboration towards socio-economic transformation. GiveDirectly works in 17 Districts in Rwanda and has provided unconditional cash transfers to over 170,000 households.
