The eastern IOD upwelling has developed into a major event - could rival 1997 and 2019 which led to massive wildfires.

We expect these types of IOD events to happen more often because of climate change.

This is a very interesting paper about the changes in El Niño/La Niña in the last century.

Tl;dr? It's complicated, but some patterns are emerging.

🔴🌎A new study shows Earth is well outside the 'safe operating space for humanity':

🚨6/9 'planetary boundaries' have been broken due to human actions.
🔀Key global systems are at risk.
📉Johan Rockström warns of 'rising signs of dwindling planetary resilience'.

Unfortunately, I have to share this graph almost every week. Heavy precipitation events are becoming more frequent and more intense in land regions with every additional increment of global warming. What we see now is not as bad as what will happen with 1.5°C of global warming.

The Indian Ocean is now in a clear positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) pattern, with abnormally warm water in the IOD West region and unusually cool water in the IOD East region. This could be the start of a positive IOD event that will influence Australia's weather this spring.
