You are either trained or untrained. There is no in-between & it will all manifest itself when it matters. You may be more talented than your peers, but when that evens out, it will be obvious who outworks whom. If others less talented than you outwork you, they will outplay you!

As a coach, it’s wonderful to see athletes I’ve coached, trained or helped achieve success in sports or in life. Not because I helped them, but because I was fortunate enough to watch them grow, change, struggle, work, learn & achieve. Those are the things that make it worth it!

AAU coaches telling kids not to post offers from Non-D1 schools is one of the most distasteful ways to handle recruitment

Happy Father's Day to all the MEN who are positively engaged in the lives of their kids & all the father figures out there! Happy Father’s Day to all the WOMEN who play both roles. To all the military fathers who sacrifice special days like this to protect us, Happy Father's Day!

Got to watch a lot of off season 🏀 lately. Things of concern:

Contested finishes, avg of 25 missed lay ups in every game
No shot makers
Passing vs. pressure
Seeking contact
Reading closeouts
Moving w/out ball
On ball defense
Spacing
Footwork into shots
Decision Making
Competing

If a person is truly committed to something, they won't stop for anything/anyone. Either you support them or they make it without you. Either way, it's going to happen! When you realize how powerful the mind is, it changes things. Nothing influences us more than our own thoughts!

The hard things in life don’t get any easier by waiting until you’re ready. Challenges never go away. Hardships won’t disappear. Obstacles don’t fade. They just sit there festering. Face them. Handle them. Then move on. Nobody is ever ready. Strength comes from doing it anyway!

'Confidence is a lot of this game or any game. If you don't think you can, you won't.' ~ Jerry West

Jerry definitely won at the game of life. RIP to one of the best to ever do it.

Don’t ever confuse rank & leadership. Having authority & being a leader are not the same. Leaders are people who make a conscious decision to look after others. Sometimes that comes with absolutely no authority, but those are the people we trust & follow. Leaders don’t need rank!

It's pretty simple. You either want to get better or you don't. Your actions reflect your commitments. You can’t fake that. Do you put your time & effort toward learning, improvement & gain? Or do you use it to make excuses & put things off? Either way, it’ll show when it counts!

Habit becomes routine. Routine becomes dedication. Dedication becomes passion. Passion becomes drive. Drive becomes motivation & when motivation runs dry, it will come right back to habits. Great ones will fuel you. Bad ones will make it easy for your passion & motivation to die!

Coaches who care about players will:

Hold players accountable to personal/team standards

Give players constant & honest feedback

Be consistent with all players

Enforce boundaries

Have difficult conversations when necessary

Know each player’s potential, push them to reach it

Outworking everyone is great, but don't forget to focus on the virtues that people will speak about long after you’re gone. It’s more than your resume; it’s your character. Be a person known for giving, helping, inspiring, encouraging, respecting, mentoring & keeping your word!

One of sports’ most valuable lessons: hard work doesn’t always result in the desired outcome. Even if you put in the time & effort to have earned it, “earned” is more often performance & production driven. Keep working. You not only have to do it, but you also have to do it well!

Successful people make a lot of mistakes. They learn from them & keep trying until they get it right. They’re DOING while you’re still WAITING. Don’t ever be afraid to make mistakes. The only way to build grit, character & toughness is to try it, make adjustments & try it again!

Many players work according to their feelings. If they are a little tired, sore or just don’t feel like it, they find excuses to skip it. The truly committed work based on principles! Excuses aren’t part of their vocabulary. When you’re fueled by passion you rarely make excuses!
