The question of transformation is at the center of this discussion, notes Bernard E. Harcourt, and the processes of becoming that happen especially at the individual level.

The union is often talked about an external entity to workers' lives, called upon when needed, but Zhao suggests that it should instead be something we 'do every day, a verb not a noun.'

Zhao recounts how when she first began organizing, certain union experts had been closed off to new and prospective union members. There has been change since then, she says.

Helen Zhao begins with how organizing forms communities and friendships. However, while unionizing often has this utopic dimension, there are many aspects of worker organizing that are not utopic, she notes.
