Good news on permitting reform!

The Department of Energy is giving a categorical exclusion from NEPA environmental review to:

- transmission projects that use existing rights of way

- solar projects on disturbed lands

- energy storage projects on disturbed lands

I spoke on a panel on decarb & a just transition at the US Climate Action Summit. The conversations about environmental justice, high-road labor policy, community benefits, & other just transition elements were front & center. That’s the result of a lot of hard work by advocates.

There’s a lot going on right now, but the Biden Administration just delivered another major climate win: updating home energy standards, helping residents save money while cutting carbon pollution. Leadership from the agencies & the White House got this done. It’s a huge deal.

All students deserve the guidance, the support, and the care of Universities to learn who they are, & to be who they are. They do not deserve mass repression from state ordered by their own universities.

1/ U.S. EPA Power Plant rule effectively requires carbon capture and storage (CCS) with 90% capture rate on existing coal power plants by 2032.

How can EPA do this?

Since a lot of folks seem to be misinterpreting this Carbon Brief graph, a quick explainer:

Yellow line is the Biden administration target.

Blue line is the modeled effects of policies (e.g. the IRA) passed in Biden’s first term.

We need stronger policy to bridge the gap.
