So excited about this: the new Historical Assoc feature 'My students struggle with...', which:

- digs into some tricky issues in history teaching,
- unpicks why they're so difficult to get right,
- gives suggestions to help teachers and their pupils!

Cracking job for a history teacher in Cambridgeshire. This dept has a really exceptional focus (systemic and regular) focus on reading & debating historical scholarship, woven into collaborative planning. Part of the outstanding history PGCE community led by Rachel Foster too.

It's almost Historical Assoc conference time!

I'll be talking about a Year 9 enquiry on fictional interpretations of the past, the history of East Africa in the early 1900s, and why I found it so difficult to plan.

Friday 2pm, in person and online. Can't wait! 🙂

Calling all creative history teachers🥁
It's rare for a job advert to say it wants you 'to spend all your time' doing the most important thing. Imagine: all your time shaping, writing, debating & renewing the history curriculum.
AND you get to work with the brill @VallanceTeach1!

My concern about this is that the incentive for schools risks moving away from *what* we are teaching (the curriculum) and towards performance metrics. Focus on the latter inevitably leads to distortions, shortcuts, and problems with the former.

Stories at the forefront. Rich narratives. Characters, hooks, substantive knowledge driving disciplinary lens.

From a practical perspective, departments can delve into their expertise and really zone in on expositions, background knowledge development etc.

Great to write for Tes about oracy and maths. Oracy is clearly the new trend. Trends can be bad - they can be ill thought through and bring about harmful genericism. But this one doesn't have to be.
