Also wanna add that the 504 sit ins could not have happened without the community care and solidarity of the Black Panther party. The disability rights movement came in the wake of civil rights, adopting (some) of its politics. Our movements have always been intertwined.

Today is the anniversary of the start of the 504 sit-ins, when in 1977 the disability community occupied federal buildings to call for issuance of Section 504 of the Rehab Act.

I honor these historic protests just as I honor the Gaza Solidarity Encampments for a #FreePalestine .

Encampments showing us the power of open + collective community commons. Barber shops, hot food, COVID PPE, medic tents + supplies. Imagine what is possible. Among rising incarceration of homeless people + criminalization of using public space, these protests can teach us a lot.

Before you preach self-advocacy in situations where a great power dynamic exists (ex. patient + doctor) please understand that for multiply marginalized people, self-advocacy can + does lead to our DEATHS. It can lead to worse outcomes of neglect, harm, violence and abandonment.

Is it just me or does it seem potentially retaliatory to request new disability documentation for previously granted accommodations in response to an employee’s complaint about ableist comments that are unrelated to a failure to accommodate?!😩😳

You just know that this is probably particularly the case for milder cases, that more severe mental health issue patients were probably substantially more likely to drop out, and that it ignores the complex relationship between disability, mental health, and marginalisation.
