Jeff Asher latest blog post does an excellent job of explaining the nuances of comparing NCVS and UCR crime rates. Data collection differences make it an 🍎 to 🍊 comparison but both have their value open.substack.com/pub/jasher/p/t…
New: it's early, but murder is down 20% in 180+ cities with any available YTD data (almost all cities through at least Feb). Murder is down 20% in 59 cities with data through Mar. Suggests a large drop in 2024 is possible though too early to say for sure.

Congrats to CCJ Crime Trends Working Group member Jeff Asher on the forthcoming Real Time Crime Index. With support from Arnold Ventures, AH Datalytics is creating a dashboard that will provide timely information on crime in up to 1,000 cities: open.substack.com/pub/jasher/p/i…
DOJ should publish crime data of quality, breadth and timeliness as the DOE and USDA do for energy/ag commodities respectively. As a step towards that goal, we Arnold Ventures are funding the creation of the Real Time Crime Index to provide accurate and actionable trend data.
