The evolution of African BioGenome Project African BioGenome Project 👏🏼👏🏼

Yesterday we confirmed the species that will be sequenced by the AGC - African BioGenome Project AfricaBP Open Institute Fellows in May 2024. Ten African scientists from 10 African countries will turn up in Morocco in May 2024 for 2 weeks for the maiden edition of this Fellowship.

Today, I asked 5 questions and made 5 recommendations to provide early driving force in making the next chapter of genomes more equitable during the Wellcome Genomics Beyond the Sequence ELS workshop.

We start the third panel on Integrating genomics and ELS with a talk by ThankGod Ebenezer, who is telling us about African BioGenome Project, which aims to coordinate projects on non-human #genomics Wellcome #BeyondtheSequence

Today, I'd like to specially thank all the scientists who are making efforts & who reached out over the past several months demonstrating their intentions to sequence African genomes on-the-ground, with their proposals at various levels of developments. To me, this is progress.

In 2021 when we launched African BioGenome Project over 90 % of emails I received were: 'how can African BioGenome Project help source & send samples for sequencing?'. By 2024, nearly all emails I receive are: 'we have a proposal to sequence on-the-ground in Africa, can African BioGenome Project partner?'

When I speak at the Wellcome workshop next week I'll challenge stakeholders to repurpose their genomics science strategies to achieve four things in Africa: 👇🏽

One of our manuscripts has landed on desk of reviewer who said that they sequence African genomes off-continent of Africa because 'it fulfill short-term mission against long-term gain in Africa, but he/she is not proud of it'. Things like this limit impact of genomics in Africa.
