Bad Boys 4 is another example, but this time it happened in a year where the theatrical business is clearly struggling. I will say once more 🗣️:
Studios have to recognize that they need to invest in BIPOC-led stories that appeal to BIPOC audiences if they want to be profitable.6/

Last year’s Creed 3 & Scream 6 showed the power of having recognizable franchises produce multiple films w/ Black & Latinx leads in attracting Black & Latinx audiences to come to the theater in droves. Both those films broke box office records for their respective franchises. 5/

You have to appeal to BIPOC audiences and give them a reason to go out to the theaters. Well-known franchises with established BIPOC stars or well-known franchises/brands remade or re-introduced with rising BIPOC stars will generally attract BIPOC moviegoers. 4/

BIPOC audiences have been driving ticket sales among theatrical releases for yrs. Although having a majority-BIPOC audience cannot guarantee that a film will be a box-office hit, it will most likely be one of the main reasons that a wide release, big-budget film is successful.3/

A prime ex. of this was The Fall Guy that only attracted 48% BIPOC audiences in its opening wknd. Our UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report has continually found that most of the top 10 films at the domestic box office have a majority-BIPOC audience during each film’s opening wknd. 2/

🗣️The box office results from this past year are the perfect example of why BIPOC audiences can no longer be taken for granted. The assumption that BIPOC audiences will go buy a tix for any white-led, blockbuster film is outdated when they have a multitude of viewing options. 1/
