btw before I go, remember to check your followers. I've not done this for a while and have noticed with people liking a recent tweet of mine there are *lots* of people I definitely followed who somewhere along the line were unfollowed and not by me. Worrying.

100% agree with this. There's been a very poor turn of late to suggest 'newness' is vital for research so people are failing to situate their work within the literature while claiming all kinds of things as novel when they very clearly aren't.

When I think about “publish or perish” I despise not only how it unnecessarily put pressure on academics to publish but also how it perpetuates this idea that the ultimate goal of research is getting a paper published, not building knowledge or benefiting researched communities.
