[Response to ECDOE Fundile Gade] Equal Education (EE) finds the MECs views, and the manner in which it was expressed, unfortunate. EE continues to support the ECDoE, and request the support of the ECDoE in our work to improve access to education rights in the Eastern Cape.

Learner placement in the Western Cape remains a long-standing systemic issue that the WCEDNews continuously fails to adequately plan for. The 2024 academic year has continued along this trend, particularly in the Metro East Education District. #SofundaSonke

Therefore, parents and caregivers along with EE and the Equal Education Law Centre (EELC), have no other choice but to approach the courts to secure the placement of the many learners who, more than two weeks into the second school term, are still at home without access to education. #SofundaSonke

Court case built on advocacy, and urgency of the people! In 2024 we still fight for school places for children from area such as Khayelitsha! While the WC government continues to feed its political ego while failing children of Khayelitsha and the surrounding areas

In 2022 the Equal Education Law Centre (EELC), alongside six parents and guardians, decided to take the WCED, Head of the Education District (HOD) and the Director of the Metro East Education District to court for their failure to place learners in schools. #SofundaSonke

The decision to go to court was motivated by parents being turned away from the Metro East Education District and being told that schools were oversubscribed (full) when trying to seek help in finding a place for their children. #SofundaSonke
