‘Irish is EU legislation-friendly’ - ‘Tá an Ghaeilge ag teacht le reachtaíocht an AE’.

During the debate on my amendments to the ‘Consumer Rights Bill’ this week I thought it strange that EU law & WTO ‘technical barriers to trade’ were invoked by the Minister to oppose them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m disappointed the Minister wouldn’t accept my amendments to introduce bilingual packaging & signage etc in the Consumer Rights Bill. I’ll continue to pursue this with the Minister and his officials in the hope they’ll be accepted at the next stage. It’s the right thing to do.

Fantastic to see over 300 people now taking weekly Irish classes at An Droichead on the Ormeau Road.

The Irish language continues to grow and thrive across Belfast and beyond. Good luck to the learners.

Ádh mór agus go n-éirí leis na foghlaimeoirí go léir. An Ghaeilge Abú!

The ‘Consumer Rights Bill’ is back in the this afternoon.
I have submitted amendments that would bring the state in line with best practice bilingualism around the world (& constitutional obligations) on packaging, signage & self-service machines like ATMs, ticket booths.

New Irish audio announcements on the west Belfast Glider bus route is a 'positive step forward' for speakers of the language, Stormont's infrastructure minister has said

If audio announcements on Glider can be made in Irish in one part of Belfast the can’t they be made elsewhere?
East Belfast has a significant number of Irish speakers/speaking families, children in IME, bilingual street signs, adult classes etc
is of & for us all

‘The entire bureaucracy, the entire court system, all industry hears and uses the colonizer's language. Likewise, highway markings, railroad station signs, street signs and receipts make the colonized feel like a foreigner in his own country.’ - Memmi

This is a welcome next step in increased visibility of the Irish language

'We are currently working on an Irish language option for the Glider ticket machines along with a very exciting Irish language roads signage scheme, the first of its kind anywhere in the North.'

Scéal iontach that audio Irish language stops will now be added alongside English to the Glider service in West Belfast.

This is another positive step in the visibility of Gaeilge on our transport services but a lot more to be done to ensure equality for the language.
