More Australian species are on the edge of oblivion – and that's just the ones we know enough about to list formally as threatened.

It is possible to stop this – but as Frédérik Saltré + ConservationBytes (@flinders) write, it will take an unprecedented effort. theconversation.com/new-ecosystems…

A recent study using climate models & ancient climate data from CABAH’s SahulSED & SahulArch databases shows that Australia was mostly wetter during the last Ice Age & human populations remained stable during the Ice Age & the unstable climates that followed.

Were Southeast Asia’s lowland rainforests replaced with a corridor of savannah grasslands during the Last Glacial Maximum? That’s the conventional wisdom, but a study suggests that the area was a mosaic of forest types mixed with grasses. In PNAS: ow.ly/48X950QmqYy

Led by Rebecca Hamilton, our results imply smooth transitions from more closed to more open forest types during drier, more seasonal climates. This also has major implications for human dispersals through the region.
